Final Thoughts
Hi friends, Akarsh here from Dio. I'm kicking off my first monthly newsletter of 2025 since my annual Founder's Letter last month. Also, a very happy Easter to all who celebrate!
Lots of exciting things have happened so far this year. Here are the topics for today's newsletter.
- Dio is the buzz of the Apple blog-o-sphere
- Our In-Kind Gift Partnership at TED 2025
- Akarsh's founding journey - CanvasRebel interview

Buzz in the Apple blog-o-sphere
Dio became quite the buzz in the Apple world over the last two months. Nearly every major Apple-centric publication picked up our product for review – entirely unpaid and organic!
This kind of press is exciting on its own, but to me, it’s also been an opportunity to calibrate: Did we really make the right product?
When I first set out to build Dio, it was to bring three guiding principles back into the audio industry: Simplicity, Flexibility, and Privacy. So I created a chart to summarize each review against our three pillars, as well as other important factors like Sound Quality and Price.

Looks like we’re right on track with our core principles and generally excelling as a speaker system!
However, I made a point to note some of the things that the reviewers wanted to improve in our product such as sound quality, USB-C, and Android compatibility. I thought this would be a great opportunity to hear from you, our Dio community - what do you think we should be building next? Whether you’re a current customer or someone who decided not to purchase from us just yet, I’d love to get your input in this quick poll:
It was also interesting to see every writer compare our product against Apple’s HomePod Mini. I decided to write a detailed blog to highlight the key differences between our product and HomePod Mini, using Apple Insider’s article as the basis for the comparison. If this has been a question on your mind, check it out!
An In-Kind Gift Partner at TED 2025
Earlier this month, we had the privilege of donating 120 Dio Node speakers to the non-profit organization responsible for bringing TED Talks to the world. Dio was an In-Kind Gift Partner at the TED 2025 conference in Vancouver, Canada.
Here are some fun pictures of Dio Node at the event.

My founding journey - CanvasRebel Magazine
Ever wondered what it takes to create a tech product from scratch? I had the opportunity recently to share my startup journey with CanvasRebel Magazine.
During the interview, I had the chance to share everything - from my background before Dio, to the problems I faced with audio that led to the "aha!" moment for the Dio idea, to the challenges of manufacturing and launching the product. I'd love to invite you to step in and see how Dio got to where it is today.
That's all for today's newsletter. Until next month!

Are you ready to take your home audio setup to the next level? Whether you're a seasoned audiophile or just dipping your toes into the world of music, audiobooks, and podcasts, choosing the right speakers can make all the difference in your listening experience - trust us! Join us as we break down everything you need to know before making that all-important speaker purchase!
Understanding Speaker Basics
First things first, the basics! Speakers come in all shapes and sizes, but they all serve the same purpose: to reproduce sound. When shopping for speakers, you'll encounter terms like "driver," "woofer," and "tweeter." Don't sweat it if these terms sound like they're speaking a different language - we've got your back!
Drivers are the components responsible for producing sound in a speaker. They come in different types, including woofers, which handle low frequencies, and tweeters, which handle high frequencies. Some speakers also feature mid-range drivers for added clarity and depth.
Consider Your Space
Before diving into the world of speaker specs, take a moment to consider your space. Are you setting up a home theater in a spacious living room, or are you looking for a compact setup for your cozy bedroom? The size and layout of your room influence the type of speakers that will best suit your needs.
For larger rooms, floor-standing speakers offer robust sound and ample bass response. If space is limited, bookshelf speakers are a more compact option that still delivers impressive sound quality. And for those seeking a minimalist aesthetic, in-wall or in-ceiling speakers provide a discreet solution without sacrificing audio performance.
Does Sound Quality Matter?
When it comes to speakers, sound quality is paramount. Or, is it?... Again, it all depends on what experience you’re seeking! Are you wanting a laid-back, compact speaker to listen to your favorite podcast while you cook breakfast, or are you getting ready to host the party of the year in your garage? If you agree with the ladder, sound is something you should probably prioritize more than the average speaker-buyer.
It's also essential to consider your listening preferences. Do you enjoy crisp vocals and acoustic instrumentation, or are you more drawn to deep, thumping bass lines? Different speaker designs excel in different areas, so be sure to choose speakers that align with your musical tastes.
Quality Construction
Pay attention to the build quality of the speakers you're considering. High-quality materials like wood or metal enclosures can help minimize resonance and distortion, resulting in cleaner, more accurate sound reproduction.
Don't forget to consider the aesthetic appeal of the speakers as well. After all, they'll be a focal point in your home audio setup - and who doesn’t want their speaker to fit in seamlessly? Whether you prefer a classic wood finish or a sleek, modern design, choose speakers that not only sound great but also complement your decor.
Additional Features
Finally, consider any additional features or connectivity options that may enhance your listening experience. Bluetooth connectivity allows for wireless streaming from your smartphone or tablet, while built-in amplifiers eliminate the need for a separate receiver.
Some speakers also offer advanced features like app-based EQ adjustments, multi-room audio support, and voice control compatibility. These extras can add convenience and versatility to your home audio setup, so be sure to explore all your options before making a decision.

In the ever-evolving landscape of wireless audio technology, two prominent players have emerged as popular choices for streaming audio content to speakers: AirPlay and Bluetooth. Both of these technologies have revolutionized the way we enjoy music, podcasts, and other forms of audio. However, they differ in several key aspects, from compatibility and range to audio quality and ease of use. In this blog post, we'll explore the fundamental differences between AirPlay and Bluetooth speakers to help you make an informed decision about which technology suits your needs best.
Technology Overview
AirPlay: Developed by Apple, AirPlay is a proprietary wireless protocol that allows seamless streaming of audio, video, and screen mirroring from Apple devices, such as iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers, to compatible AirPlay-enabled speakers and other devices. It ensures high-quality audio transmission and synchronization across devices.
Bluetooth: Bluetooth is a widely used wireless technology that enables communication between various devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and speakers. It uses radio waves to establish short-range connections and is compatible with a wide range of devices, regardless of the manufacturer.
Compatibility
AirPlay: One of the main differentiators between AirPlay and Bluetooth is their compatibility. AirPlay is limited to Apple devices, which means you need an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to initiate the streaming. While there are third-party apps and workarounds to extend AirPlay compatibility to non-Apple devices, the native experience is reserved for Apple users.
Bluetooth: Bluetooth, on the other hand, offers broader compatibility. It works across various devices and brands, making it a versatile choice for users who want to connect different devices without being tied to a specific ecosystem.
Audio Quality
AirPlay: When it comes to audio quality, AirPlay often provides superior performance. It supports lossless audio transmission, allowing for high-resolution audio playback. This makes it an excellent choice for audiophiles and those who prioritize the highest possible sound quality.
Bluetooth: Bluetooth audio quality has come a long way, but it typically uses lossy compression codecs that can slightly degrade audio quality, especially for discerning listeners. However, recent advancements like aptX and AAC codecs have improved the overall sound quality of Bluetooth audio, closing the gap with AirPlay to some extent.
Range and Stability
AirPlay: AirPlay's range and stability largely depend on your Wi-Fi network. Since it operates over Wi-Fi, the range can extend to your entire home if your network coverage is strong. However, if you move out of the network's range, the connection may be lost, interrupting your audio playback.
Bluetooth: Bluetooth operates over shorter distances, usually up to 30 feet (10 meters), depending on the class of Bluetooth technology. While this limits its range compared to AirPlay, Bluetooth has the advantage of maintaining a stable connection within its specified range, even in areas with congested Wi-Fi networks.
Setup and Ease of Use
AirPlay: Setting up AirPlay can be relatively straightforward if you're within the Apple ecosystem. Once your AirPlay-enabled devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, you can easily select the desired speaker from your Apple device's control center and start streaming. However, if you're trying to connect non-Apple devices, the process may involve more steps.
Bluetooth: Bluetooth's setup process is generally more universal and user-friendly. Pairing devices is often as simple as enabling Bluetooth on both devices, selecting the desired speaker from the list of available devices, and confirming the connection. This ease of use makes Bluetooth a popular choice for quick and hassle-free connections.
In the realm of wireless audio streaming, both AirPlay and Bluetooth have their strengths and limitations. AirPlay offers exceptional audio quality and synchronization for Apple users, while Bluetooth provides broader compatibility and ease of use across various devices and brands. Your choice between the two will depend on your specific needs and preferences. Whether you prioritize top-notch audio quality, seamless compatibility, or the ability to connect multiple devices, understanding the differences between AirPlay and Bluetooth speakers will empower you to make the right decision for your audio streaming experience.
Dio and AirPlay
Dio recognizes that in the ever-evolving landscape of wireless audio, the ability to cater to Apple users is crucial. AirPlay's seamless integration with Apple devices allows Dio speakers to provide an unparalleled user experience for Apple enthusiasts. With AirPlay, Dio users can effortlessly stream their favorite audio content from their iPhones, iPads, or Mac computers with the utmost convenience and without compromising on audio quality.
